LASUBEB and NIEPA Collaborate to Enhance Education Planning and Management in Lagos State
Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has engaged the services of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo, to improve the Board’s skills in education policy and development strategies. The 3-day capacity-building workshop, held at Dover Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos State, was declared open by the Executive Chairman, Dr. Babatunde Hakeem Shittu, on Monday, September 1, 2025.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Shittu stated that the workshop is a testament to LASUBEB’s commitment to improving the quality of basic education in Lagos State, in line with His Excellency, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s “Greater Lagos” Plan. The plan aims to drive sustainable development and improve the lives of Lagosian, with a focus on education as a key driver of growth. The workshop, centered on “Education Policy Development Strategies and Purposeful Implementation of Basic Education Programme,” is designed to equip LASUBEB Management staff with the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to develop and implement effective education policies, drive purposeful programme implementation and ultimately enhance the quality of basic education in the state. The SUBEB Boss emphasized that the training would enable the board to engage with contemporary policies in education, better equip them to engage stakeholders and monitor education progress in all the respective Local Government Areas (LGAs). He then charged the participants to fully engage with the experienced facilitators from NIEPA Ondo to be better equipped to “Leave No Child Behind,” in consonance with the organization’s motto. This according to him, will improve learning outcomes, enhance education delivery, and ensure that all children in Lagos State have access to quality basic education.
Also at the event, Dr. Anne Lara Ogunsola, Head of Training and Research at NIEPA, speaking on behalf of the Ag. Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. David Shofoyeke, thanked LASUBEB and UBEC for organizing the capacity-building workshop to strengthen the board’s managerial ability to function optimally. She stated that the theme of the workshop had been carefully crafted to enhance the board’s capacity to develop and implement effective education policies and strategies for improving the quality and accessibility of basic education in Lagos State. The Training Head underscored the importance of such training workshops in the operations of any system, highlighting their valuable gains to include improved service delivery, enhanced stakeholder engagement and better education outcomes. Dr. Ogunsola then urged all education stakeholders to patronize NIEPA’s various programmes for their capacity-building needs. She emphasized that NIEPA in collaboration with UNICEF is currently engaged with over seven states in building and developing their various education sector plans that would drive sustainable development in the education sector. She noted that these plans when finalized would help to improve learning outcomes, ensure equity and enhance the overall quality of education in the respective states.
Other notable LASUBEB management members who were present at the workshop include Dr. Saheed Ibikunle, Board Member in charge of School Support Services (SSS) Department; Hon. Jimoh Adewale, in charge of Co-curricular Department; Dr. (Mrs.) Sherifat Abiodun Adedoyin, in charge of Basic Education Quality Assurance; Hon. Owolabi Jamiu, in charge of Planning, Research and Statistics; and Hon. Sijuade Idowu Tiamiyu, in charge of Social Mobilisation. Additionally, Bar. Yewande Cole Jeje, Special Assistant to the Governor on Basic Education, and Mr. Akeem Lamidi, Board Secretary, were also in attendance to underscore the board’s commitment to collaborative efforts in driving quality education in Lagos State.
According to the Director Teacher Professional Development, Mrs. Olayemi Babarinde, the aim of the workshop is to equip the Board with the requisite knowledge, skills and strategies necessary to drive effective education planning and management in Lagos State, ultimately enhancing the quality of education and ensuring that no child is left behind.
